It’s a touchy subject. Privacy is something we all hope to have and enjoy. Could GPS be used by the government, your employers, or parents? Sure. Is it an invasion of privacy? Perhaps. Having the ability to track where someone is and where they are going kind of feels like your space is being violated. However, if your not doing something you shouldn’t, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. We will cover 3 reasons why GPS is worth having even if it invades your privacy.

1. GPS helps parents keep track of their kids through their cellphones or cars. Why is this a good thing? Because parents have the right intentions and are looking for nothing more than the safety of their child. I can’t even imagine how many parents have lost children and wished that they could have maybe found them if GPS had been available. Some of the phone services parents can use are Sprint Family Locator, Disney Mobile, and Verizon Wireless Chaperone.

2. GPS improves driving efficiency for workers. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that a driver that knows he is being tracked won’t do anything that might get him fired. Should workers be upset about GPS systems tracking their vehicles? Only if they plan on cheating their employer. They should be doing their work without GPS. If it helps motivate them, all the better.

3. GPS helps with public safety. Tracking convicted criminals including sex offenders can really help deter further crimes against the public. This type of tracking is gaining popularity very rapidly. Some police departments are even using GPS tracking to determine when drunk drivers go near bars or alcohol stores.

While there are certainly concerns of privacy that should be weighed in on, in the end, GPS is really a good thing when used properly.
